Teacher Conferences, Volunteers, & Physical Education

Teacher Conferences

If you wish to talk to your child's teacher regarding your child's progress or conduct, please call the school (221-1391) and schedule an appointment.  Conferences are held during the teacher's planning time, before and after school. An academic team meeting may be required at the request of  the school.  These meetings are to ensure the success of your child. This team may consist of you the parent, student, counselor, school nurse, administration, and teachers.

Volunteers

Parents are encouraged to volunteer. You are needed to assist in the daily operation of the school. Please contact the school if you are available to help.

Physical Education

Students are expected to participate in all PE activities daily.  PE is a teaching and learning situation. Students are expected to view it as such. Students who are not able to participate due to illness or injury will need a note from their physician.

Registration & Attendance Information

Registration Requirements

Alabama Law requires that all students enrolled in Alabama schools have the following documents on file:

  • Original copy of certified Birth Certificate
  • Original copy of the child’s Social Security Card
  • Original Certificate of Immunization (blue form) from the Health Department or your child’s family doctor.

Student Residence

Students must attend the school serving the legal residence of their parents, the residence of the approved acting school guardian, or the residence of a legal guardian. Parents are required to complete a Registration/Certificate of Residence Form and provide two proofs of legal residency. Please update immediately if your residence or phone number changes.

Attendance

Students are required to attend school daily. It is the responsibility of parents or guardians to make sure that their children arrive on time each day. Parents must send a written note explaining the absence or a doctor’s excuse within two days of the student’s return to school to have an absence coded as excused. Excused absences include illness, death in the immediate family, inclement weather which is dangerous to the life and health of the child as determined by the school, and/or other emergency conditions as determined by the principal. Five unexcused absences will result in an investigation from the attendance officer and a possible court appearance. A note is essential.

Students are required to be on time for school. It is the responsibility of the parents or guardians to assure that their children arrive on time each day. After ten tardies, the child’s name is referred to the Attendance Officer.

Discipline Policy

Discipline

Standards of student conduct will be maintained and consequences for misconduct will be enforced.  Each student will adhere to school and classroom rules also.

If you have any questions about our system of discipline, please refer to the Student Code of Conduct. Our discipline committee has developed a school-wide discipline plan based upon the Mobile County Public School System's Student Code of Conduct.

Holloway Elementary School Discipline Policy

Discipline is important in providing a safe and orderly environment that is conducive to learning.  It helps to prepare our students to assume their positions as productive citizens in our democratic society.  At Holloway, we try to use preventive techniques and ask our students to abide by the following School-Wide Rules:

  • We arrive at school on time, in uniforms, and ready to learn.
  • We walk quietly at school, on the right side of the hall.
  • We are in our designated areas at all times and carry a hall pass when not with a teacher.
  • We are quiet and use good manners in the cafeteria.
  • We keep our hands, feet, and bodies to ourselves.
  • We respect ourselves, other people, and their property.
  • We are responsible for obeying the Student Code of Conduct for Mobile County Public Schools.

All students are expected to follow Mobile County Public Schools Student Code of Conduct. The book classifies student misconduct and outlines punishments for violations. Parents and students are expected to read and become familiar with rules and regulations governing expected behavior. Each parent will receive a copy. All disciplinary actions will be in accordance with the Code of Conduct Handbook.

Miscellaneous Information

Parties, Telephone, and Field Trips

Parties

A Christmas Party and an End-of-the-Year Party for the class are planned by room mothers in cooperation with the teacher. No other parties will be held for students, teachers or staff.

Recognition of birthdays must be done during snack time with permission from your child's teacher . Example: Healthy Treat that complies with the Wellness Plan adopted by the Mobile County Public School System. A monthly celebration will be held for the students on the last day of the month by Ashland Place (Partners in Education)  or our school cafeteria.

Telephone

Students are allowed to use the telephone only in case of emergency. Parents should support our policy of keeping phone messages for  children at zero. Students are not allowed to have or carry cellular phones at school for any reason.

PLEASE LET YOUR CHILD KNOW BEFORE COMING TO SCHOOL IF THERE IS TO BE ANY CHANGE IN THE WAY HE/SHE COMES HOME THAT DAY. RAINY DAY PLANS ARE PARTICULARY IMPORTANT. Put it in writing and send to your child's teacher if there will be changes in the way your child gets home.  No phone calls can not be accepted  in the office if there will be a change in plans. This is for the safety of your child. We never know if the person on the other end of the phone is you.

Field Trips

All field trips are related to classroom studies. A signed field trip permission form is required for each field trip. Fees are sometimes required and must be paid.

NO REFUNDS ARE GIVEN ON FIELD TRIPS FOR ANY REASON unless the field trip is cancelled!

Visitors

(All individuals that are not employees or students of Holloway)

The Mobile County Public School System has implemented a visitor identification system. The primary purpose for these regulations is to insure the safety of all students and staff.

All visitors must report to the school office. Employees of the school system are to advise the school principal, or secretary that they are in the building. Other persons must receive permission to be on the school grounds. A school designated visitor’s identification nametag or badge, which can be visibly displayed while at the school once permission is granted, will be issued. Visitors are expected to sign the visitor’s log.

We appreciate your cooperation in implementing these safety guidelines.

School Closing

In the event of hazardous weather conditions, an official decision will be made for all Mobile County Public Schools. That decision will be broadcast on local radio and television stations. In case of severe weather or any emergency threat during the day, you may pick up your child at school, but please do not call. Come to the office and we will call your child/children from his/her classroom.

Textbooks and Library Books

Students are allowed to borrow State textbooks and when doing so, parents must sign responsibility forms. These books must be cared for and kept covered at all times.  Students should not write in textbooks or tear any pages. Textbooks are assigned by number to each student by his or her classroom teacher. If the books are lost or damaged, they must be paid for before additional books are issued. Parents should stress the importance of caring for textbooks with their children to avoid charges for lost or damaged books.

Students are expected to take care of library books and are responsible for paying for lost or damaged books. Encourage your child to read at least 20 books a year.

Field Trips

All field trips are related to classroom studies. A signed field trip permission form is required for each field trip. Fees are required and must be paid in advance. Out-of-town or admission field trip monies are non-refundable.
